How to make a great first impression when selling your home

You won’t get a second chance to make a great first impression on buyers.

Before you put your home on the market it’s absolutely crucial that it’s in tip-top shape and ready to “wow” buyers before they even get the chance to open the front door.

Buyers will often make up their mind about a property within the first few moments of viewing it from the street, so make sure that those first viewings count.

Focus on the entrance

The entrance tends to be the focal point of the exterior of the home and it’s the place that buyers might spend a bit of time while they wait to get a view inside.

It’s definitely worth spending some time neatening up the front entrance and pathways leading to it. This could mean painting the front door, adding a welcome mat and pot plants or just clearing away any toys or other items lying around. Don’t forget to neaten up shoes too.

De-clutter every corner

Clutter is a massive turnoff to buyers. Even though they are buying your property and not your “stuff, it can still take away from their image of the home and prevent them from being able to picture themselves living there.

It’s best to clear away items from bench tops and corner spaces. Don’t just shove things away in the cupboard though as buyers may look there too.

If you have no room to store extra items consider either donating or disposing of them or hiring storage for the duration of your sale.

Make everything sparkle

Everything at your property should be immaculate before buyers get a chance to see it. Make the effort to clean your home from top to bottom, inside and out.

Hiring a professional cleaner can help make the job easier. You can do it yourself too but you need to make sure you can get the place looking spotless.

Add some ambience

Styling is important when selling. Consider investing in new items like cushions, throw rugs, linen and wall art to give your home some modern style and character. You can then take these items with you when you move.

Flowers and pot plants around the property can also add a nice touch.

If you’d prefer to leave styling to the experts invest in a professional property stylist to help make your property stand out.

Ask your agent for extra tips

Every property is different and what works to help sell one might not help another.

The best thing you can do from the start is to chat to a local property specialist and get tips and advice to help you sell your home for maximum value.
