The Mudgee region will join racing history next Tuesday 22 August when it plays host to the iconic 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup.
Mudgee, Gulgong and Kandos will join 30 other cities and towns included in the 15th Annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.
Since its inaugural year, the Tour has taken the cup to over 377 towns and cities across Australia and New Zealand, providing communities with a rare opportunity to experience the magic of the $200,000 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy. Now it will be Mudgee’s turn.
According to the Mid-Western Regional Council’s August Community News, the Mudgee region was chosen as part of this year’s Tour for its community spirit, passion and rich racing history. This year also marks 100 years since Westcourt, a horse with historic ties to Mudgee, won the cup.
The cup is due to arrive in Mudgee on Tuesday 22 August when it will be unveiled at a Mudgee Business Chamber Breakfast. A private visit to schools and nursing homes around the region will follow.
Members of the community will have the chance to get up close and get a photo with the cup during public receptions at Mudgee Library from 3.00pm until 4.30pm and at the Post Office Hotel, Gulgong from 6.00pm until 7.30pm.
Those who get a photo with the cup are encouraged to upload it to Facebook using the hashtags #PeoplesCup and #EmiratesMelbourneCup, for the chance to win a trip for two to Flemington for the running of the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
