Walk Safely to School Day

walk to schoolTomorrow is the nationally celebrated ‘Walk Safely to School Day’ that sees Primary School aged children across the country walk or commute safely to school.  Naturally we don’t encourage young children to walk alone, but rather see Walk Safely to School Day as an opportunity to educate Mudgee children about road safety, and the health benefits of walking and staying active.

If you don’t live within an easy walk of your school, the day can also be a great time to leave the car in the garage and help to reduce traffic congestion by teaching your child to use public transport safely.  If you do need to drive, try parking 10 minutes from school and walking the rest of the way.  This will give your child the opportunity to practice walking with you, holding your hand at all crossings, and waiting for traffic lights and school crossing whistles before crossing roads.

According to their website, the aims of Walk Safely to School Day are:

  • To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
  • To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road.
  • To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
  • To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
  • To promote the use of Public Transport.
  • To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
  • To reduce the level of traffic congestion.

Our Professionals Mudgee Real Estate team would like to encourage all Mudgee parents to make the most of the day, and encourage others to join in the walk.  Let the walk be enjoyable as well as educational.  If you know several parents who usually drive, why not meet up at the same point and allow the children to walk to school together?
